FAA Medical Certificate Class Types

First-Class Medical Certificate

Required for airline transport pilots. First-Class privileges are valid for 12 months if you’re under 40 and 6 months if you’re 40 or older.

Second-Class Medical Certificate

Required for pilots exercising commercial pilot privileges. Second-Class privileges are valid for 12 months regardless of age.

Third-Class Medical Certificate

Required for private, recreational, and student pilots. Third-Class privileges are valid for 60 months if you’re under 40 and 24 months if you’re 40 or older.

BasicMed

An alternative to holding an FAA medical certificate for eligible pilots and aircraft. BasicMed has its own medical exam, education, aircraft, and operating requirements.

What to Expect During Your Exam

During your FAA medical exam, Dr. Mark will evaluate several areas of your health based on FAA medical standards, including:

  • Vision and eye health
  • Hearing, balance, and ear/nose/throat checks
  • Blood pressure, heart, and cardiovascular health
  • Mental health and cognitive evaluation
  • Neurologic function and overall fitness for flight
  • Urinalysis (standard lab screening)

How to Prepare

Before scheduling your FAA medical exam, complete your MedXPress application with the FAA. Once you receive your confirmation number, contact us to schedule your appointment.

To prepare for your appointment:

  • Bring your MedXPress confirmation number.
  • Avoid caffeine and tobacco beforehand, as they can affect your results.
  • Bring your glasses or contacts for vision testing.
  • Bring any important paperwork related to medical conditions.
  • Be prepared to provide a urine sample during the exam.
