FAA Medical Certificate Class Types

First-Class Medical Certificate

Required for airline transport pilots. Valid for 12 months if under 40, and 6 months if 40 or older.

Second-Class Medical Certificate

Required for commercial pilots flying for hire (private planes). Valid for 12 months regardless of age.

Third-Class Medical Certificate

Required for private pilots, student pilots, and certain non-commercial operations, including some drone operations. Valid for 60 months if under 40, and 24 months if 40 or older.

Basic Medical

Available as an alternative to a Third-Class certificate for private or recreational flying. Allows flying most small aircraft (up to 6 seats and 6,000 lbs. max takeoff weight). Not valid for pilots flying professionally.

Before scheduling your exam, be sure to complete your MedXPress application with the FAA (https://medxpress.faa.gov/MedXpress/Disclaimer.aspx). Once you receive your confirmation number, contact us to book your appointment.

For best results:

  • Bring your MedXPress confirmation number.
  • Avoid caffeine and tobacco beforehand, as they can affect your results.
  • Bring your glasses or contacts for vision testing.
  • Bring any important paperwork related to medical conditions.
  • Be prepared to provide a urine sample during the exam.
